From June 2 to 4, the city of St. Louis, Missouri (USA), became the global epicenter of the biofuels industry. Nova Smar attended the Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo (FEW), solidifying its strategic role in supplying high-tech solutions to the corn ethanol sector.
FEW is widely recognized as the largest and most important trade show in the global corn ethanol sector. In its latest edition, the event attracted a highly qualified audience of approximately 2.500 registered visitors and brought together around 400 exhibitors from 30 different countries.
Representing Nova Smar with a focus on expansion and international partnerships, the following attended the event: Luciano Lemes (international account executive), Ricardo Turazzi (software intelligence advisor), and Eduardo Munhoz.
Technology Spotlight: The DT301 Transmitter in the Spotlight
The star of the show at the Nova Smar booth was the DT301, an FM (Factory Mutual)-certified density and concentration transmitter custom-designed to meet the ethanol industry’s stringent safety and efficiency standards. The device attracted significant interest from end customers and system integrators due to its high value-added features and the fact that there is very little global competition for critical applications.
The DT301 plays a key role in two crucial stages of the production process:
• Measuring the fermentation cutoff point: Optimizes process time and ensures maximum yield from the fermentation tanks.
• Measuring alcohol content: Ensures absolute precision at the outlet of the distillation columns.
In addition to the DT301, the company showcased its complete line of transmitters and positioners, as well as advanced control systems based on the LC800 PLC and the new DCN OPAs (Open Process Automation), reinforcing its commitment to digital transformation and Industry 4.0.
The Global Landscape: The United States and Brazil in the Lead
The investment in FEW reinforces Nova Smar’s strategic plan to expand its market share in the world’s largest biofuel producer. The ethanol market features a fascinating and complementary dynamic between the two major players in the sector:
United States: The world leader, with an annual production of approximately 63 billion liters. The U.S. production mix is heavily concentrated on corn, which accounts for 94% of the total, while only 6% comes from sugarcane.
Brazil: The world’s second-largest producer, with about 41 billion liters annually. Historically focused on sugarcane (75%), the Brazilian market has been experiencing rapid expansion in corn, which now accounts for 25% of national production.
This technological convergence makes Smar’s technical expertise perfectly applicable and highly competitive in both scenarios, especially in the North American market, which seeks maximum optimization in its corn plants.
Established Presence and Expansion Plans
Nova Smar is already a reality in the United States energy ecosystem. The company has been contracted to provide complete automation for the ACE Ethanol plant in Wisconsin (WI). This facility is recognized as one of the most technologically advanced in the global market, utilizing innovative 3DMAX technology for the production of cellulosic ethanol (second-generation).
The successful operation at ACE Ethanol serves as the company’s primary technical and commercial showcase. Nova Smar’s key expansion plan in the U.S. involves replicating this success by serving new reactors and distilleries in the demanding American ethanol market.
With the solutions presented and the strong interest generated at FEW, Nova Smar is taking a decisive step toward international growth, bringing Brazilian engineering and technology to the forefront of the global renewable energy sector
