O-PAS Architecture

The O-PAS Architecture allows the construction of reliable, secure and scalable process automation systems (small or very large), which do not require process shutdown to carry out upgrades, extensions and can be applied to existing plants and new constructions . The following image shows the automation systems architecture proposed by O-PAS.

The main elements of this architecture are the DCNs , Distributed Control Nodes. As the name suggests, it is the distributed control node, that can be physical or virtual. DCNs are responsible for performing I/O acquisition, control and gateway function applications for integration with existing devices and systems.

To connect all elements of the architecture and provide reliable and secure communication, there is the OCF, O-PAS Connectivity Framework. OCF uses OPC-UA as a communication standard, allowing horizontal and vertical communication between all network elements. In an OPC-UA network, the GDS (Global Discovery Server) is an essential component of the architecture that aims to provide a discovery service for OPC-UA clients.

The GDS is responsible for maintaining a centralized record of information about the OPC-UA servers available on the network. When an OPC-UA client wants to connect to a server to access data or functionality, it can query the GDS for information about all available servers. This information includes details about the location (IP address, port), the identity of the server, and the features it offers.

Nova Line

Nova Smar makes available to the global automation market its new line of distributed control systems, the Nova Line, which implements O-PAS technology, Open Process Automation Standard.

NovaDCNs also work as a gateway to other networks or systems, such as legacy systems, wireless gateways, digital field networks, I/O, and DCS or PLC system controllers. NovaDCN also has Gateways in its line that allow the integration of System302 with O-PAS.

Containers are software units that package applications and their dependencies into a single package, simplifying the creation, deployment and execution of applications in different environments. NovaENGINEs Smar are capable of executing control logic on Dockers platforms. Furthermore, NovaENGINEs are independent and can be run on any hardware compatible with O-PAS, with configuration being done using an XML file.

Makes up the NovaENGINE Smar:

  • OPC-UA server, responsible for communicating between the container and the O-PAS network, providing the Information Model for applications and cyber security.

  • FB Run Time, responsible for executing control functions such as function blocks, sequential logic, IEC 61131-3 logic and IEC 61499 logic.



Open technologies make it possible for hardware and software components from different manufacturers to be used together in the same application or subsystem. The data and communications structures used by the function blocks are standardized to ensure interoperability. And the complete feature description allows different configuration software from different manufacturers to perform the configuration in a standardized way.

With a practical and intuitive graphical interface, NovaCSB (Nova Control Strategy Builder) allows the execution of the control strategy using block diagrams. As it is a Web application, it is not dependent on operational system and hardware, being compatible with any and all devices, regardless of manufacturer and operational system.
